I discovered some things to be true during my time in uniform. Less is most often more. Tradition matters. NBA jersey sleeves are weird. While a blue jersey might be what you would want and should see if you were to look up Notre Dame football in the dictionary, the best Irish basketball jerseys play the iconic dome gold, in particular. After crunching the numbers, I’ve ranked Notre Dame’s top four basketball uniforms. Not sorry.
Alexa, play “So fresh, so clean”.
These white substitutes are CLEAN manuals. I give first place to this white and gold freshness. While I almost always give style points to compound gold, there’s a boldness to this color choice that just works. As the cleanest combination on the list, this plain offers the ideal glow of gold against white. The gold is just metallic enough to recall the golden dome, but subtle enough to avoid attracting attention; the proportion is perfect here.
Every day is St. Patrick’s Day
This shade of gold takes me back to the Irish days of Pat Connaughton. I called out the Washington Wizards on this blog about the importance of using gold wisely. This gold is just understated enough to work for both the jersey and the shorts together. The design incorporates both the school colors and a splash of green without resulting in an overwhelming finished product.
This one strays from my goal of gold, but this one makes the list because we see the basketball team removing an amount of green that was just too much for the football team in design from the 2015 Shamrock series. The outline around the script and the trim on the shorts tie the look together to form another balanced use of gold, blue and green. It pained me to put this clean green unit against its gold counterpart in second place, but I ranked it third purely because of the whole “not a school color” thing. #tiebreaker
A combination of muted gold and Celtic-inspired writing scores points for this retro uniform. I’d like to see future uniforms incorporate a text style inspired by the university’s Irish heritage. Block serif lettering may be safe, but it lacks character. While this gold is a smart choice, a shade just a pinch to that of second place on this list would have rounded out the script more effectively.
